HEADLINE: POQUOSON WINS ITS FIRST LED BY DEFENSE, KUREK
ISLANDERS PLAY KEEP-AWAY, BEAT JAMESTOWN

TEXT: Poquoson shut down Jamestown's vaunted passing attack for much of the game Friday night to win its first football contest of the year, 19-11.

The victory ended a four-game losing streak for the Islanders (1-4, 1-3 Bay Rivers District). Jamestown is winless in five outings (0-4 in the district).

Mark Kurek, who gained 35 yards on 11 carries, partnered with Nick Jones to form a linebacker tandem that kept the pressure on Eagles quarterback Matt McDaniel most of the evening. McDaniel, the second-leading passer in the district, completed 10 of his 15 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown, most of that coming in Jamestown's 11-point fourth quarter.

By then, Kurek had already done his damage. He scored three touchdowns on short runs as the Islanders used a methodical, ball-control offense.

"All the coaches met on Sunday to come up with a defensive game plan," Poquoson coach Don Ward said. "We moved personnel around. Kids in the secondary stepped up."

Young kids at that, as Ward started building for the future.

Jamestown's Pete Dreisbach had six receptions for 72 yards, putting him over the 400-yard mark for the season.
