POQUOSON - Senior running back Matt Kurek punched
over the game's only touchdown Friday night to give Poquoson a 7-0
non-district victory over Mathews at Poquoson Middle School.
Kurek, who finished with 84 yards on 12 carries, scored from the
6-yard line in the third quarter, providing the Islanders (3-6) with
their second victory in as many weeks. Last week, they knocked off
Bay Rivers District title contender Southampton.
Mathews (4-5), a Group A school from the Tidewater District, had
one big scoring opportunity with a second-and-goal from the Poquoson
1. James Krigsvold, a 221-pound battering ram, was stopped for no
gain. He carried again and was thrown for a 2-yard loss. The Blue
Devils went on to turn the ball over on downs.
The Islanders dominated in the statistical categories, collecting
279 yards total offense -- 255 yards rushing -- while holding
Mathews to 155. Justin Mulkey carried 16 times for 66 yards and Jake
Hollingsworth 16 times for 67 yards of that Poquoson total.
Poquoson ends its season next Friday night by playing host to
Tabb.
