YORK - The York Falcons outscored Poquoson by 13
points in the fourth quarter to come away with a 40-27 football
victory Saturday night at Bailey Field.
York (4-3, 2-3 Bay Rivers District) jumped to a 14-0 lead with a
little more than five minutes left in the first quarter. The Falcons
marched 66 yards on nine plays on their opening drive, capped by
Glenn Banks' 8-yard run.
After holding the Islanders (1-6, 1-5) to three plays on their
first possession, York struck quickly for its second score.
Derrick White sprinted 46 yards up the middle for the touchdown,
and the Falcons threatened to run away. However, the Islanders hit
York with 20 second-quarter points.
Banks' fumble on a punt return gave Poquoson first and 10 at 15.
The Islanders needed three plays to score, finished by Mark Kurek's
3-yard TD run.
After holding the Falcons on their next series, Poquoson got a
67-yard pass from John Farmer to John Eversole to draw within two
points.
York then fumbled on the kickoff, giving the ball to the
Islanders at the 13. From there, Kurek went in for his second score
on a 1-yard plunge, giving the Islanders their first lead.
White tied the game on a 8-yard run for York, and it was 20-20
until the final period.
York drew first blood with quarterback Matt Klump hitting Kelly
Foreman on a 17-yard scoring toss. Poquoson then came down on a
51-yard drive, with Jake Hollingsworth going over from 2 yards to
force a tie at 27.
Klump's second touchdown throw -- 47 yards to tight end Blake
Gamez with 3:01 left -- put the Falcons up by six.
Linebacker Jason Dye made York's third interception of the night,
picking off a Farmer pass with 2:08 remaining to end the Islanders'
final threat.
