I'm Not Really Sure What Happened Today

 Wednesday (12/17/2010)...

I am definitely slipping on my obligations.  What a wonderful time of the year. I would like to dedicate this discussion to the wonderful talents and dedication of Back River Youth Sports.  A few years ago, I was privileged to be a founding President of Back River Youth Sports Association.  I learned about the Politics in the city of Poquoson and decided to do something.  My son Jon was a starting football player for Menchville, a triple A school.  We moved to Poquoson and Jon found himself riding the Pines until his senior year. I found out the High School team only played about 14 players. I decided to do something about that.  I was approached by Mr. Keith Goodson and he asked me if I wanted to be apart of a new team in Poquoson.  After seeing what small town politics did to Jon, I told him of course, what did he have in mind.  I was elected to be the founding President of BRYSA. My son Mark played for Poquoson Youth Football and was also denied playing time. The team only fielded about 15 players the rest just stood on the sidelines.  Mark was playing since age 5 and was an exceptional player. I figured if BRYSA fielded a team that would double the experienced players moving up to the high school.

We started the league and two of the teams went to their respective Super Bowls. Our Coaches Were outstanding.  Our supporters were second to none.  I was previously on the board of Oyster Point Youth Football.  I encouraged some OP teams to come along and scrimmage our boys.  We did well and we grew.  (They were much bigger)

Now, I would like to thank all those coaches and founders because we finally realized a great feat.  Our High School, for the first time in 100 years won the state championship in Division 3 football.  This was a team that was fielded by young men that came from Poquoson Youth Football and Back River Youth Football.  I do not want to belittle the exceptional coaching of Coach Duty and his crew, But I do want to thank all those winds beneath their wings.  All to include the JV Coaches and teams, the Cheerleaders, the band, Back River Coaches, Poquoson Youth Football Coaches and most of all those associated with starting BRYSA. They include: Mr. Keith Goodson, Mr. Timmy Goodson, Mr. Keke Goodson, Ms Indy Goodson, etc. etc. Thank You all for giving me the opportunity to see a great win by our High School Team.  Go Islanders.  This was one of mine and Mr. Keith's visions.  I am happy to see it to fruition. I wish Mr. Keith was here.

 Amen...

Thank You, Mike Kurek
